Julia, his auction company’s recent sales included a Napolean-era pair of cased pistols by Boutet Arms (Versailles, France)—”the finest gunsmiths in history,” he says—that went for $438,000. In March 2009 Julia auctioned off the firearms collection of Dr. Joseph Murphy of Philadelphia, a collector of Colt pistols. Nicolas-Noël Boutet (31 August 1761 – 1833) was a French gunsmith and bladesmith who was director of the Versailles state arms factory. More than 600,000 weapons were produced under his directorship.

WebSep 26, 2024 · Nicolas Noel Boutet was born in Paris on August 31, 1761. His father, Noel, was the Royal Gunsmith at the time, and taught Nicolas the trade. Before the French Revolution, he became a gunsmith for King Louis XVI himself. It was at this time that he became the director of the state arms factory in Versailles.
