Web28 Feb 2014 · Poverty and inequality have gained a new public presence in the United Kingdom. Literature, and particularly narrative literature, (re-)configures how people think, feel and behave in relation to poverty. This makes the analysis of poverty-themed fiction an important aspect in the new transdisciplinary field of poverty studies. Webpoverty is projected to increase by about one percentage point between 2015 and 2024, absolute child poverty is projected to rise by around four percentage points (Cribb et al, 2024). As a result, 30 per cent of children, or 4.1 million, were living in relative poverty in 2024-18 in the UK; 70 per cent of these were in working families.
